Orange by #7 17” x
Maria Sibylla Merian
This print is one of two that we have and will would like to keep them
together. You can see that on the back
in “German” is the number 7 and the other is 8. They were part of a series.
These are not just prints, these were either hand pressed,
woodblock or lithograph.
We believe that they were taken out of a very old Historic
book and sold as individual items. In those days (18th or 19th
Century) that would make the sum of the pages worth more than the book.
We learned about this at the Huntington Library. They tell you that many of these types of
books were scavenged for money, and since there were only very few printed
because of the work involved, they destroyed some very valuable and precious
things. We don’t know more yet about
these prints. But in person they are extremely detailed. You can also see that they were not always
in these frames, by the dark mark across the top of #8.
We will be trying to research these at some point in German,
to see if we can pin point the original book.
